[1] Oxygen treatment results in pathologic growth of vessels in the developing retina that may lead to permanent damage to the retina as well as retinal detachment and macular folds. WebRetinopathy of prematurity is classed into five stages. These range from very mild to very severe. Most babies will have stage 1 or stage 2 and will go on to have normal vision.
