He was the first New Zealander to be awarded the VC in World War I. WebCyril Basset was the first soldier in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) of WWI to be awarded the VC, which also was the only one awarded to a serving member of the NZEF for the Gallipoli Campaign.
